Syrian president Assad in Russia meets Putin in Kremlin; return home today

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Syrian President Bashar Assad have held talks in Moscow, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. He added that Assad informed the Russian leader about the situation in Syria and the plans of government forces.

“Yesterday evening Syrian President Bashar Assad arrived in Moscow for a working visit,” Peskov said.

The two leaders conducted lengthy negotiations, which then continued in the presence of Russia’s top policymakers.

“The agenda of the negotiations is clearly understandable,” the Kremlin spokesman said. “President [Putin] was informed in detail by his Syrian counterpart about the current state of affairs in Syria and the long-range plan.” 

In particular, Putin and Assad discussed issues related to the continuation of Russia’s air operation in Syria.

“Naturally, the talks focused on fighting terrorist extremist groups, carrying on with the Russian operation, and support for the Syrian army’s offensive,” Peskov said, adding that the presidents also discussed “various aspects of bilateral relations.”

During the negation, Putin told Assad that Russia is ready to contribute not only to fight against terrorism but also to find a political solution to the crisis in the Arab country.

Putin further noted that at least 4,000 citizens from the former Soviet Union are fighting along with terrorists is Syria, adding, “We can’t let them appear in Russia.”

Assad reportedly said that all Syrian people want to participate in deciding the future of the country.

He also appreciated the Russian support for eradicating terrorist in Syria.

Russia began its military campaign against terrorists in Syria on September 30 upon a request from the Damascus government, shortly after the upper house of the Russian parliament gave President Vladimir Putin the mandate to use military force in Syria.

Syria has been gripped by foreign-backed militancy since March 2011. The crisis has claimed the lives of more than 250,000 people so far and displaced millions.

Bashar Assad returned Syria today October 21th.
